Oscars 2018: Get Out

Updated: Dec 16, 2019

Now that Chris (Daniel Kaluuya) and his girlfriend, Rose (Allison Williams), have reached the meet-the-parents milestone of dating, she invites him for a weekend getaway upstate with Missy and Dean. At first, Chris reads the family's overly accommodating behavior as nervous attempts to deal with their daughter's interracial relationship, but as the weekend progresses, a series of increasingly disturbing discoveries lead him to a truth that he never could have imagined.

This one probably won't be very long because Get Out is great and culturally significant so I've not thought of anything silly to write about it. I wrote my 'mother!' review with a heavy heart, thinking that would get nominated and this wouldn't but O' joy! I got my wish! Maybe karma isn't real after all! Get Out skewers white people in a way that us whities were probably a bit taken aback by. It's not those ol' classic Trump-supporting knuckle-draggers that the #lads like Colbert and John Oliver will parade out on their shows and absolutely #roast from behind their #desks. No! Its the #lads themselves in the firing line. Yes, woke liberals, maybe retweeting Obama every now and then isn't enough. Maybe racism is a pervasive institution built into the foundation of our society, uh oh. Shit. Seemingly mild-mannered, neoliberal white people being the antagonists in a horror film is a gorgeous stroke and the satire is biting throughout. As a white person watching this film it's hard not to hear well-intentioned versions of friends, family members, even yourself in lines like "if I could have voted for Obama for a third time, I would!" and it forces you to be bloody self-reflective for once. If you're uncomfortable, good, you're learning, oh - and this film is 99% discomfort by the way, enjoy.

The beats are enjoyable, the twists are fun, our lad Daniel is a star and all in all, Get Out is a blast. The only thing I WOULD say (because I am, and always will be, a little bitch) is that the pacing felt super off in the final act. This film is 90% tense build up and 10% pay off and I dunno, I would have liked more old white person bashing at the end. They have to pay for Trump and Brexit somehow. It by no means ruins the film, it just felt a tad imbalanced, that's all. I was expecting something Hot Fuzz-esq but it felt more like a couple of wallops and then the credits. But, like I say, I'm a little bitch. It's still great.

WHO THIS FILM IS FOR:

Everyone, mom.

WHAT THIS FILM DOES WELL:

Genre and satire.

WHAT THIS FILM DOESN'T DO DEAD WELL:

More old white people should have got the shit kicked out of them, frankly.

WHAT THIS FILM IS COMPARABLE TO:

It's kind of a first tbh, hopefully it sets a precedent.

WEIRDEST MOMENT:

That dude sprinting around the garden at night, especially after the reveal, it like, doesn't really fit?

OSCAR POTENCH?:

Daniel winning Best Actor would be excellent. I don't think it's the best film though, soz.
